Events

We have arranged the following programme of events this summer, all to be performed on the bandstand. In future the Council's Events Team will be responsible for all bookings and they will hold their own programme of events on the bandstand in 2010. If you wish to perform on the bandstand in future or wish to hire the bandstand please see the Council's web site at http://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk.

The Brighton Petanque club, which meets near The Meeting Place café on Hove seafront, is welcoming new members and the chairman has invited anyone interested in the bandstand restoration to join. You do not have to be a paid up member of the Bandstand Campaign to join, though of course there is a joining fee for the Petanque Club. Final Event 2008

Christmas carol singing in Churchill Square Atrium in December 2008
Considering we only had one longish rehearsal, we seemed to go down a storm on both the Monday and Tuesday before Christmas. Our age group was 8 - 70s: feisty kids, brilliant teenagers, three Dads (The Mums were Xmas shopping) and two Grandmas. We sang our hearts and lungs out and another £50 dropped into Reuben's viola case. Father Christmas took advantage of a brief lull in his business to invite us all in to his den under the Christmas tree, and a picture was taken of all the young people with Pa Christmas himself.

The £50 will cover a basic mike for the bands this summer as we need one to introduce them and our own continuing existence. The Prom officers are very keen that we continue to host bands, as there is no council budget whatsoever left over in 2009 to pay bands and choirs.

Events in 2008

12 October 2008 - Salvation Army Band, the Salvation Army Band was delighted to be asked to close our 2008 season of concerts on the Prom. They were especially pleased with the weather which their leader, Charles Swansbury declared he "couldn't have wished for better"! The warm goodwill their presence and the weather generated made up for the concerts which were washed out or cancelled in August.

21 September 2008 - Ska Toons Jazz Band’s mesmerising selection of modern reggae-style jazz went down a storm. This was followed with a return performance, by popular request, of the Patcham Silver Band.

14 September 2008 - The Sussex Jazz Orchestra gave a marvellous performance enjoyed by all.

10 August 2008 - Brighton & Hove City Brass delighted a wide audience of all ages with their lively, wide-ranging selection of music.

8 June 2008 - Patcham Silver Band returned to play another splendid concert to an appreciative audience.

24/25 May 2008  - An Evening with Noel Coward  was performed in St Andrews Church for the Brighton Festival Fringe and was well received making a profit to fund the summer season of more bands on the prom.

Events in 2007

October 2007 - Joseph on the Prom – a “from scratch” choir of 50 youngsters from 15 schools was assembled to sing songs from Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat, kindly sponsored by the Hilton Metropole. Joseph on the Prom was performed on the prom, in St Andrews Church and in the Hilton Metropole: a hugely exciting trio of events for participants and audiences.

September 2007 – The Patcham Silver Band and the Patcham Youth Band played next to the Bandstand – the first to do so in three decades! The event was hugely appreciated by a large audience which gathered to listen.

July 2007 – A clean up of the bandstand area was carried out by a group of Bandstand Campaign members.

June 2007 – Children’s Poster Competition – Many young artists had great fun in Pavilion Gardens (and in the Pavilion when it rained)  creating posters depicting the bandstand.
